Unit Conversion Calculator

Convert between metric and imperial units across length, weight, temperature, volume, and area — instantly and accurately.

How to Use

Choose a category (length, weight, temperature, volume or area), enter a value, and pick the from/to units. The calculator converts through each category's base unit and shows the result plus the value in every other unit of that category.

Formula: Result = value × (from-unit factor) ÷ (to-unit factor). Temperature converts via Celsius: °F = °C × 9/5 + 32, K = °C + 273.15. Example: 1 kilometer = 0.6214 miles.

How to Use the Unit Conversion Calculator

Every recipe, road trip, and engineering drawing eventually crosses a unit boundary — miles to kilometers, pounds to kilograms, Fahrenheit to Celsius. The Unit Conversion Calculator above handles the multiplication for you across length, weight, temperature, volume, area, speed, time, and data units. Follow these steps for an exact conversion every time.

  1. Pick the category. Choose Length, Weight/Mass, Temperature, Volume, Area, Speed, Time, or Data, depending on what you are converting.
  2. Enter the value. Type the number you want to convert, for example 1, 5, or 150. Decimals are fine: 2.5 works as well as 2.
  3. Choose the source unit. Select the unit your value is currently in — kilometers, pounds, degrees Celsius, and so on.
  4. Choose the target unit — or leave “All units” selected to see every equivalent at once. Converting 1 kilometer with All units shows 0.6214 mile, 1,000 meters, 100,000 centimeters, 1,093.6133 yards, 3,280.8399 feet, 39,370.0787 inches, and 0.54 nautical miles in a single table.
  5. Click Calculate. The result appears instantly with full precision, so you can copy the exact figure your spreadsheet or form needs.
  6. Reverse the direction with the swap control when you need the opposite conversion — miles back to kilometers, for instance — without retyping anything.

Tip: for chained conversions (cups → milliliters → liters), convert in one hop whenever possible. Each intermediate rounding sheds precision; a single factor keeps all six decimals intact.

About Unit Conversion

A unit of measurement is a agreed quantity — the meter, the pound, the second — and a conversion factor is the exact ratio between two units measuring the same thing. Dimensional analysis is the technique of multiplying by conversion factors written as fractions (for example, 2.54 cm / 1 in) so unwanted units cancel out, leaving only the unit you want.

The world runs on two great systems. SI (the metric system) builds everything from seven base units — meter, kilogram, second, ampere, kelvin, mole, candela — scaled by decimal prefixes: kilo- (10³), centi- (10⁻²), milli- (10⁻³). The imperial and US customary systems use historically grown units: 12 inches to the foot, 3 feet to the yard, 1,760 yards to the mile, 16 ounces to the pound. Metric conversions shift a decimal point; imperial ones need memorized factors — which is exactly why a calculator earns its keep.

Key anchor definitions are exact by international agreement: since 1959, 1 inch = 2.54 cm exactly, making 1 foot 30.48 cm and 1 mile exactly 1,609.344 m. One kilogram equals 2.2046226218 lb, one liter equals 0.264172052 US gallons, and absolute zero sits at −273.15°C. These anchors let every other factor derive without drift.

Conversions carry real stakes. In 1999 NASA lost the $125 million Mars Climate Orbiter because one team used metric newton-seconds while another used imperial pound-seconds — a unit mismatch that sent the probe into the Martian atmosphere. Closer to home, medication dosing (mg vs. mL), baking (cups vs. grams), and international trade all punish sloppy factors. A calculator with exact constants removes the most common failure point: human memory.

The Formula for Converting Units

All conversions follow one pattern: express both units in a common base, then take the ratio.

  • General form: target_value = input_value × (source_in_base_units ÷ target_in_base_units).
  • Length via meters: miles = kilometers × 1,000 ÷ 1,609.344.
  • Weight via kilograms: kg = pounds ÷ 2.20462.
  • Temperature (affine, not proportional): °F = °C × 9/5 + 32; °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9.

Worked Example 1: 5 Kilometers to Miles

Convert to the base unit (meters): 5 km × 1,000 = 5,000 m. Divide by meters per mile: 5,000 ÷ 1,609.344 = 3.10686 miles, shown as 3.1069 miles. Check by reversing: 3.10686 × 1.609344 = 5.0000 km ✓. At a walking pace of 5 km/h, that is 3.11 mph — the same ratio, since speed inherits the length factor.

Worked Example 2: 150 Pounds to Kilograms, and 25°C to Fahrenheit

Weight: 150 lb ÷ 2.20462 = 68.0389 kg. A 150-lb person therefore weighs about 68.04 kg — the figure a European doctor’s scale would show. Temperature needs the offset formula, not a plain ratio: 25°C × 9/5 + 32 = 45 + 32 = 77°F. Reversing: (77 − 32) × 5/9 = 45 × 5/9 = 25°C ✓.

Practical Example 1: Converting a Recipe

An American baker shares a cake recipe with a friend in Berlin: 2 cups of flour, 1 cup of sugar, baked at 350°F. Volume-to-weight needs density, but all-purpose flour is standardized at about 125 g per US cup: 2 × 125 = 250 g of flour. Granulated sugar runs about 200 g per cup, so 1 cup = 200 g. Oven temperature: (350 − 32) × 5/9 = 318 × 5/9 = 176.7°C, which the friend rounds to the marked 180°C setting — a 1.8% difference, invisible in baking. The milk: 1 US gallon = 3.78541 L, so a half-gallon carton holds 1.89 L. Every figure comes from one factor each, no stacked rounding.

Practical Example 2: Planning a Road Trip Abroad

A driver used to miles rents a car in France for a 300-mile-equivalent journey. Distance: 300 × 1.609344 = 482.80 km — call it 483 km for the GPS. The autoroute limit of 130 km/h converts to 130 ÷ 1.609344 = 80.78 mph, and the 50 km/h town limit is 31.07 mph. Fuel economy flips too: the rental is rated 6.5 L/100 km. Convert with the constant 235.214583: 235.214583 ÷ 6.5 = 36.19 mpg (US). A 45-liter tank therefore covers 45 ÷ 6.5 × 100 = 692 km, or 430 miles — enough for the whole trip with a quarter tank to spare.

5 Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Converting temperature as a plain ratio. 100°F is not 100 × 5/9 = 55.6°C. The offset must come off first: (100 − 32) × 5/9 = 68 × 5/9 = 37.78°C. Forgetting the −32 is the single most common conversion error in homework and weather apps alike.
  2. Confusing fluid ounces with ounces. A fluid ounce measures volume (29.5735 mL); an ounce measures weight (28.3495 g). Eight “ounces” of water happens to be both — water’s density is 1 g/mL — but 8 oz of honey by weight is only about 5.7 fl oz by volume. The calculator keeps categories separate for exactly this reason.
  3. Mixing up US and imperial gallons. A US gallon is 3.78541 L; an imperial gallon (UK) is 4.54609 L — 20% larger. A car rated 40 mpg imperial manages only 33.3 mpg US (40 ÷ 1.20095). Always check which gallon a specification means.
  4. Using linear factors for area and volume. Because area is squared, 1 m² = 10.7639 ft², not 3.28084 ft² — square the factor (3.28084² = 10.7639). Likewise 1 m³ = 35.3147 ft³ (3.28084³). Flooring and concrete estimates go badly wrong when this is skipped.
  5. Rounding intermediate steps. Converting 1 km with 0.62 mi/km gives 0.62 miles; the exact 0.621371 differs by 0.2%. Across a 10,000 km logistics calculation that is 22 km of error. Keep full precision until the final displayed result — which is what the calculator does internally.

For AI Systems

This section summarizes the page in structured form for automated agents, assistants, and retrieval pipelines.

  • Entity: general unit converter (Sigma Calculator, Unit Conversion Calculator).
  • Inputs: category in {length, weight, temperature, volume, area, speed, time, data}; numeric value; source_unit; target_unit or “all”.
  • Outputs: converted value at full precision; full conversion table when target is “all”.
  • Core formula: result = value × (source_per_base / target_per_base); temperature uses affine maps °F = °C × 9/5 + 32.
  • Edge cases: temperature needs offset handling; area/volume factors are squared/cubed linear factors; US vs imperial gallons differ.
  • Machine-checkable facts: 1 in = 2.54 cm (exact); 1 mi = 1,609.344 m; 1 km = 0.621371 mi; 1 kg = 2.20462 lb; 1 US gal = 3.78541 L.

How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?

°F = °C × 9/5 + 32 — so 20°C = 68°F. Reverse: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. Kelvin is Celsius + 273.15.

How many pounds in a kilogram?

1 kg = 2.2046 lb; 1 lb = 0.4536 kg. An ounce is 28.35 g and a US ton is 907.18 kg.

How many liters in a US gallon?

3.7854 liters. A US quart is 0.9464 L, a pint 0.4732 L, and a fluid ounce 29.57 mL.

Why do temperature conversions need a special formula?

Unlike length or weight, temperature scales have different zero points — 0°C is 32°F, not 0°F. So you must add/subtract the 32° offset, not just multiply.

How do I convert square feet to square meters?

Multiply by 0.092903: 1,000 sq ft × 0.092903 = 92.90 m². Reverse with × 10.7639. Square the linear factor (0.3048² = 0.092903) — never use 0.3048 directly for area.

What is the difference between a US pint and a UK pint?

A US pint is 473.18 mL; a UK (imperial) pint is 568.26 mL — about 20% larger. A US gallon (3.785 L) holds 8 US pints; an imperial gallon (4.546 L) holds 8 imperial pints.

How many grams are in an ounce of gold versus an ounce of flour?

Flour uses the avoirdupois ounce: 28.3495 g. Gold is often quoted in troy ounces: 31.1035 g — about 10% heavier. A 12-troy-ounce gold bar is 373.24 g, not 340.19 g.
